Systemic inflammation in COPD

چکیده
T here is a growing recognition that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition that involves multiple organs and systems. In addition to emphysema and airway inflammation and remodelling, COPD is associated with various local and systemic complications including cachexia, weight loss, osteoporosis, muscle wasting, heart failure, atherosclerosis, dementia, depression, and cancer. Strikingly, these extrapulmonary manifestations of COPD account for the vast majority of morbidity and mortality in COPD patients. 5 Treatments that modify these complications may improve survival in patients with COPD, 6 whereas treatments that exclusively target the airways generally do not. 7

Background & Aims : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by irreversible airflow obstruction. Many of the systemic manifestations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are mediated through increased systemic levels of inflammatory proteins. Oxidative stress and inflammation are the major hallmarks of COPD and inflammatory factors can be used as a biomarker to asses...
متن کاملSystemic Inflammation in Older Adults With Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome
PURPOSE The role of systemic inflammation on asthma-COPD overlap syndrome is unknown. This study aimed to examine systemic inflammation in asthma-COPD overlap syndrome, and to identify associations between clinical characteristics and inflammatory mediators in asthma-COPD overlap syndrome. METHODS In 108 adults older than 55 years comprising healthy controls (n=29), asthma (n=16), COPD (n=21)...
متن کاملHomocystein Level and Total Antioxidant Capacity in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Abstract Background and Objective: Oxidant-antioxidant imbalance plays a key role in pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to evaluate homocystiene and total antioxidant capacity in COPD patients, compared to smoker and non-smoker healthy people. Material and Methods: We measured total antioxidant capacity with Cayman Kit, uric acid with Pars Azm...
متن کاملNeurohumoral activation as a link to systemic manifestations of chronic lung disease.
COPD is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Treatment of COPD improves lung function but is unlikely to slow the steady downhill course of the disease or reduce mortality. In COPD, numerous abnormalities can be found outside the lung. These include systemic inflammation, cachexia, and skeletal muscle dysfunction. Thus, COPD has been called a systemic disease. Convincing data demons...
متن کاملSystemic and local inflammation in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: is there a connection?
Increasing evidence indicates that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and probably asthma are associated with low-grade systemic inflammatory changes. In patients with COPD, systemic inflammation is considered a key factor in the pathogenesis of the multicomponent disease manifestations. Spillover of inflammatory mediators into the circulation is generally considered to be the source ...
متن کاملCOPD and stroke: are systemic inflammation and oxidative stress the missing links?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive airflow limitation and loss of lung function, and is currently the third largest cause of death in the world. It is now well established that cardiovascular-related comorbidities such as stroke contribute to morbidity and mortality in COPD. The mechanisms linking COPD and stroke remain to be fully defined but are likel...
